The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, released in October 2024, evaluated over 2,000 institutions across 115 countries and territories. The University of Oxford secured the top position for the ninth consecutive year, surpassing Harvard University’s previous record of eight consecutive years at the number one spot.
In the top 10 global rankings, the institutions are:

Notably, the University of Melbourne is the only Australian institution in the world’s top 50, ranked 39th. However, other top Australian universities like the Australian National University, University of Sydney, University of Adelaide, and University of Queensland experienced declines in their rankings.
In India, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore is the highest-ranked institution, securing a position in the 251-300 range. Other Indian universities, such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), also feature in the rankings, though they are generally placed in the 401-500 range.
The rankings assess universities based on 18 performance indicators across five key areas: teaching, research, citations (research influence), international diversity, and industry income. These comprehensive evaluations provide insights into the global higher education landscape, highlighting institutions that excel in various academic and research domains.
